Criminal charges — know your rights
Two rights matter most and they're the same in every state: the right to remain silent and the right to a lawyer. We explain your rights and the process and help you get organized for the attorney who defends you — we do not represent you.
A criminal case moves through predictable stages — arrest, a first appearance where release is decided, the charging decision, disclosure of evidence, and trial — each with its own deadlines. The most damaging mistakes happen early: talking to police without a lawyer, missing the first court date, or not requesting appointed counsel when you can't afford one.
HWS is not a law firm and does not give defense strategy. We provide plain-English know-your-rights education, help you understand the timeline, and help you organize the discovery and a clear record for your attorney. In New York, New Jersey & Arizona we go deeper on the state's process; everywhere else you get the general guide. A criminal charge puts your liberty at risk — retain a licensed criminal-defense attorney.
